Skills for Safety - part 1

This violence prevention course is for

  • Culturally isolated women including migrant and refugee women in urban areas and women isolated by a culture of violence

  • Women isolated geographically e.g. rural communities

  • Women isolated by disability

When: 21 & 28 August (this programme is over two Saturdays)

Time: 1-.3.30pm

Where: Miramar & Maupuia Community Centre, 27 Chelsea St, Miramar

The course will be taught by Angie Meiklejohn, an Accredited Self-Defence Teacher at Women’s Self Defence Network - Wāhine Toa

Programme content will include:

  • Awareness discussions re violence: e.g. ‘victim’ / ‘attacker’ dynamics, recognising and responding to early signs of potential violence.

  • Self-esteem and confidence building: building the belief in one’s own abilities to deal effectively with situations of potential / actual risk of sexual violence.

  • Strategies to keep / get safe: from sexual violence, including cyber sexual violence (internet, text, etc).

  • Physical skills and strategies: e.g. strong voice, vulnerable points, grab and strangle releases, defences from ground position

  • Programme content will be tailored to suit the needs, strengths and abilities of programme participants. We focus on what participants can do, not on what they cannot.

  • Programme content will also reflect issues of sexual violence risk as identified by programme participants.
